The Reina-Valera Bible is the sacred scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, translated into Spanish. The Word of our God remains forever. The first complete translation of the Bible into Spanish, known as La Biblia del Oso or Reina-Valera (RV), was published on September 28, 1569. The translator was Casiodoro de Reina. During the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, the Reina-Valera became widely disseminated. Today, the Reina-Valera (with various revisions over the years) is one of the most widely used Spanish Bibles by many Christian churches derived from the Reformation (including evangelical churches), as well as other Christian faith groups such as the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, International Gideons, and other non-denominational Christians.

Translation by Reina. Casiodoro de Reina, a Spanish Jerónimo monk from the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, worked for twelve years on the translation of the Bible after going into exile to escape persecution by the Inquisition. The Bible del Oso was published in Basel, Switzerland. It is called Biblia del Oso because of the illustration on its cover of a bear trying to reach a honeycomb hanging from a tree. This illustration, the logo of Bavarian printer Mattias Apiarius, was used on the cover to avoid the use of religious icons, as any translation of the Bible into vernacular languages was prohibited at that time.

The translation of the Old Testament, as explicitly stated by Casiodoro de Reina in his "Admonition of the Interpreter of the Sacred Books to the Reader," was based on the Masoretic Hebrew text (Bomberg edition, 1525). As he considered that the Latin Vulgate had already fulfilled its role and contained errors and changes, he preferred to use as a secondary source Sanctes Pagnino's Latin translation (Veteris et Novi Testamenti nova translatio, 1528), because "by all learned men in Hebrew language it is considered the purest until now", correcting the Masoretic version whenever it deviates from the Old Testament quotations in the New Testament. He always had the Ferrara Bible (Abraham Usque and Yom-Tob Athias, 1553) at hand to resolve doubts. This Bible was a translation from Hebrew to Judeo-Spanish used by Sephardic Jews, which Reina considered "a highly esteemed work" because it provided "the natural and original meaning of Hebrew words and the differences of verb tenses."

For the translation of the New Testament, Reina relied on the Textus Receptus (Erasmus 1516, Stephanus 1550), the Complutensian Polyglot, and the best Greek manuscripts known at that time. Apparently, he had in view the versions of Juan Pérez de Pineda from 1556, Francisco de Enzinas from 1543, and translations by Juan de Valdés.
